Ah Socal 2007

This past week in socal has been totally rad. there's not other word for it. here are a few highlights:

1. trying to surf for the first time--and getting totally worked in the process

I Looked Better Out of the Water
2. *this has to be kept confidential for now*
3. watching the sunset at dog beach with my bro
4. running 10 miles last sunday, both on highway 101 and also on the beach. now i have an odd "runner's tan," if that does exist
5. kicking it with leta at swami's cafe, talking for hours on the beach and reconnecting
6. go x-mas shopping in encinitas and solana beach for the fam, which included:

For my bro: a journal from solo
For mum: tea light candles, verbena soap, candles, massage oil and bath mix, a blue Chinese good luck fish for "peaceful prosperity," lychee rose soap
For erika: *censored for now*

7. Finishing a short story about race, class and power in socal entitled "Neologism." it's about this nerdy, linguaphile mexican girl who falls in love with a greek exchange student and the rich female bully who wants to ruin her life.
8. Ah yes, christmas. some of the highlights for me were:

Sims naufragés/castaway for my DSリット
A thich nhat hanh calender
A dalai lama book of days, one thought for each day
The hotel es vive ibiza compilation by fierce angel
New boxer shorts--can never get enough. holla!
A cornucopia of incense
A traveler's tin of dark chocolate
A rad swami's t-shirt
Some glucose injections for my ass--just playing.

9. For x-mas, my mum, bro and i spent part of the day at san elijo beach, eating yummy food from the cardiff market deli on warm rocks and listening to the waves before i made a sand mosaic with rocks. it was so beautiful it hurts.

Surf v. Snow

Insert riveting Thievery Corporation song and you've got yourself a soundtrack for this montage.

So here we go:

Domer doggie looking FINE as hell

Where's erika's chin?

The last warm day in chicago

I tried out for America's Next Top Car Thief, but I didn't get the part

After we ran 10 miles, i discovered little bug floating away

Bright lights big Jesus

Snowstorm in chinatown

snow
faster than
the smell of
cedars

Strike the pose, tree

So quiet ears ring

Tower of Song

Snow gusts when frozen
Snapshots of the spirit world
Thank god for chow funn

The sky above colorado

First rainbow sunset i've seen in socal in years

I remember what you were and i know where you are

Surfing with my brother in cardiff

Españolismos 1

Today, I learned some new Spanish jargon and I hope to use it on Erika every chance I get. This is going extremely boring for everyone except:

People learning Iberian Spanish, people moving to Spain, Spaniards who wanna laugh their asses off, grammarians, and for that, I really do apologize in advance.

But onward now. Here are 4 new expressions I learned today perusing the old dictionary:

1. The Spanish way of saying Do you think I was born yesterday? is: Crees que me chupo el dedo? Literally, "do you think I'm sucking my own finger?"

2. In Spain, the way to say "telling a lie" is contar una trola, which, as I later learned, does not mean "to tell a story about a troll," as I think it should. Are you telling me another story about a troll Jackson? --No, I'm not. Honest.

3. What a bummer is best translated as Qué lata, which I suppose you could translate as "what a tin can" but I'm sure something was lost in translation.

4. Lastly, "boyfriend" in Spain, when it's not spoken by a drag queen, but by a chica, really means kid, guy, fella, bloke. Caballeros y Caballeras, I introduce you to the word chorbo.

Now, let's put this all together in a nice little dialogue so I can remember this shit:

--¿Eh, Juana?
--¿Sí?
--¿Todavía sales con tu chorbo?
--¿Manuel?
--Exacto.
--Ya non. Hace dos semanas que rompí con el.
--¿Qué? Venga! Me cuentas una trola.
--Ojalá.
--¿Crees que me chupo el dedo?
--No sé. ¿Tienes una fixación oral?
--¿Yo? Claro que no.
--Bueno, no sé qué decir, pero es verdad. Nos separamos chica. No me gusté como me trataba en frente de sus amigos y a él no le gusté mi colleción de libros.
--Que presuntuoso!
--Yo sé.
--Que lata! Estabaís lindos juntos.

Flash Fiction Published in Fringe Magazine

One of my shortest pieces of flash fiction was recently accepted and published in the very tight feminist boston-based electronic journal FRINGE MAGAZINE.

Change Gonna Come is now live. When you get a second, please check it out. Peace, Love, --j2b

ECHAR=Playa (And I Don't Mean "Beach")

I have this strange theory that there are certain words in another language that are crucial in order to truly learn how to speak it well. In French, these were expressions like par rapport à and à travers, and these words become invaluable when you're speaking French.

Well, I think I just learned the first great orphan of the Spanish language for me. It's the verb "echar." Echar is like the biggest playa of all time in Spanish. This word sleeps with, and socializes with, so many other words and meanings that's it's almost disgusting, if only it wasn't so fascinating to watch.

ECHAR

1. To throw, as in echala en la basura
2. To put, as in echa esos pantalones en la lavadora
3. To pour or add something, as in eché sal en la salsa
4. To give, to dish out, me echó una gran reprimenda
5. To mail, as in echo algo al correo
6. To sprout, as in las hojas han echado rápido
7. To throw somebody out, to expel somebody, as in le han echado del partido
8. To sack somebody, as in que lo echen!
9. To lock the door, as in echaste la llave?
10. To brake, as in echó el freno!
11. To calculate, as in cuántos años le echas?
--siempre me echan años de menos
12. To show something on the television.
13. To read someone's fortune, as in me estaba echando las cartas.
14. To pull down, to demolish, as in echaron abajo el edificio o el gobierno
15. To ruin plans or objects, as in echó a perder mi vestido.

Now, how in the hell could one verb mean so many things? I honestly have no fucking idea, but that just goes to show you how important and useful this word really is.

Now, if you'll excuse me, es hora buscar que echan esta noche en la tele.

We Only Say Goodbye in Words

After listening to her maybe ten times this whole summer, now i can't stop listening to amy winehouse's song "back to black." I'm totally addicted to it in a bad way. I've played that track at least a 100 times.
